A brand new casino being built in Natchez, Mississippi might be providing more than entertainment for any local residents when it opens next month. City officials are considering asking the casino to pay extra tax to cover fire protection money for the local residents. How this is expected to work, however, is just not very clear at this stage.
The Natchez board of directors this week voted on entering a half million dollar contract with the city of Natchez for fire protection services for people living outside of the city’s limits. The city has since increased this request by a further $50,000 with seemingly no rhyme or reason. Casino Gambling firm Premier Gaming, the company which is to manage the revolutionary growth and development of the Natchez Casino, is expected to pay a 30% royalty to the county on all takings.
The county is hoping that this money can be used for the purposes of fire protection. The real question however, is fairly simple. Why exactly should the casino pay money for fire protection, when it is surely residents who are responsible for their own safety? Can they not set up smoke alarms themselves?
